What Is MST's Summer Camp?
Summer Camp is a performing arts playground where professional theater artists serve as mentors. With an emphasis on creativity and collaboration, we provide hands-on opportunities for students to make an original contribution in all aspects of play production.
-
: In addition to fun, fast-paced rehearsals every day in theater and dance, students will get to explore enrichment classes such as stagecraft (in which students will construct their props and costumes), storytelling, stage combat, and theater history.
-
: Your child already has the tools he or she needs to love the arts—and to create them: a voice, a body, and an imagination. At Main Street Theater’s summer camp, your young actor or actress will be able to exercise those tools under the mentorship of theater and performing arts professionals.
-
: Within each age group, students write and stage their ORIGINAL theater pieces and dance pieces, creating their own roles, lines, and choreography. They may base their piece on a story they know or characters they would like to portray, learning the fundamentals of acting and dance by applying them to the pieces they create.
-
: Never been on stage before? Or do you already do lots of plays? Everyone is welcome in our performing arts camp. Students of all skill and experience levels learn from each other in rehearsal, and our small classes ensure individual attention.
-
: In our day-to-day class process and our final performances, every child will be featured and every child will be challenged. Children of all skill and experience levels learn from each other in rehearsal.
-
: At the end of each session, students present their plays and dance pieces on one of Main Street Theater’s stages. Family and friends are invited to attend free of charge!
-
: Energetic, professional teaching artists are passionate about education and ready to help your students explore the performing arts! They are actors, directors, dancers and educators, and they are experienced at working with students of all skill levels.
-

The Group formerly known as D is now the Summer Studio Company! Students aged 12-14 now have the opportunity to explore a different focus in each class. Depending on the session, they can enroll in Comedy Showdown, Shakespeare Mashup, Filmmaking, and Project Broadway!
We wanted to create something special for our “Group D” students, kids aged 12-14, where creativity and collaboration still formed the underlying structure, but where they could focus on different interests. The result was the Summer Studio Company. Each session offers a different focus—check out the descriptions below! Summer Studio Company is full-day and follows the same schedule as camp for younger kids, so it’s convenient to enroll younger and older students in the same time slot. As always, our classes are open to kids of all skill and experience levels, so students can feel free to try something new!
KOS Classic: This is the summer camp you’ve come to know and love. Collaborating with their classmates, students will create and stage a short play and dance piece—and be introduced to every phase of the artistic process along the way! (MST – Chelsea Market Session 1 and Session 4)
Shakespeare Mashup: Students will explore the many worlds of Shakespeare in a fun and physical way, relating to the characters through their own experiences. For their final project, students will feature their favorite characters in a mashup of great Shakespeare scenes, in new settings and styles. Comedy, tragedy, treachery, and swordfights guaranteed! (MST – Chelsea Market Session 2)
Greece is the Word: Ancient Greece, birthplace of theater, is full of treasure—from gods and monsters to fables and drama. For their final project, students will create pieces inspired by the richness of Greek myths, legends and literature. (MST – Chelsea Market Session 3)
Project Broadway: Students will write a short musical based on a plot suggested by an existing song of their choice. (For example, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” might inspire a musical about a scary Halloween night, and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” might lead to an epic urban adventure.) Working with their instructors, they will write, stage and choreograph this mini-musical for performance on the last day of class. (No singing necessary!) (Shlenker Session 1)
Comedy Showdown: From standup to sitcom, from improv to comic timing, this class will introduce students to the “how” of funny! Students will use what they learn from comedy classics like Charlie Chaplin, Abbot and Costello, and Whose Line Is It Anyway? to create a variety show to perform on the last day of class. (TBA)
Library Alive: Anyone who has ever dressed up as a favorite character knows the thrill of seeing a beloved book in 3-D. Library Alive lets you explore the experience of bringing books to life as a playwright, actor, and dancer. Give yourself a new challenge as you adapt a book to create a new play and dance for young audiences! (TBA)

You are consistently my daughter's favorite camp/summer activity!
I am sure you have made a difference to each of them for the rest of their lives. My daughter can’t wait for next summer!
Thanks for understanding your role not only as a summer camp, but as important caregivers during the chaotic summer months. My son has declared you his all time favorite summer camp, and I have to agree, it's mine too! We will be back!!!
This is the second year my daughters attended and they are hooked!! They love the chance to be creative and put on their own show with their own ideas.
Fantastic experience !!
You guys were great!!! It was obvious the kids had a large part in the processes and the final show set them up for success.
