  Rehearsal and Performance

We offer two types of Rehearsal & Performance (R&P) classes - R&P Lab and R&P By Audition.  Both are directed by first-rate professionals, and both put on a performance at the end of the rehearsal process, and both require learning lines outside of class.  Everyone who signs up for the R&P Lab classes will have at least one role in the final performance for family and friends.  The R&P By Audition classes' performances are open to the public, but not all who audition will be cast.  There are no prerequisites for either type of class.  Choose the level of your challenge!

The Magician's Nephew

Long before Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy went through the wardrobe, a boy named Digory must stay with his Uncle Andrew while his mother suffers from an incurable illness.  Digory and his neighbor Polly discover that Andrew, a bumbler who calls himself a magician, has found a way to visit other worlds.  In one of those worlds, Digory and Polly accidentally awaken an enchanted queen, Jadis, who wants to use Andrew's invention for her own purposes.  To keep her evil power out of London, the children transport Jadis to a newly created land called Narnia...

Ages:  8 - 14
Audition:  No audition necessary. 
Just sign up! Everyone in the class will have a role (or several) in the play.
Dates: Dec. 2, 2008 - Feb. 5, 2009 (No rehearsal during Winter Break, Dec. 21 - Jan. 4.)

Winter R&P By Audition
The Magic City

When Philip and Lucy construct an elaborate model city, their hateful Nurse vows to smash it.  Before she can, Pip and Lu awaken inside the city.  Called Precarious, its fate depends on a coming battle between a Deliverer and a Destroyer.  At first welcomed as Deliverers, the children are challenged by the power-hungry Pretenderette, who claims she will save Precarious.  Dreams and reality intertwine as Pip races to unmask the mysterious Pretenderette and to discover if his true role is to be the city's Deliverer - or its Destroyer.  By the author of Five Children and It and The Phoenix and the Carpet.

Audition Dates and Times: Tues. & Thurs., Nov. 11 and 13, from 4:15 - 6:15 p.m.
(Attend 1 day.  There is no fee to audition.)

  Winter Skills Class

Stage Combat – NEW!!

Stage combat is the art of creating the ilusion of stage fighting without hurting--or even tough--other actors. This three-hour workshop will give you just a tasteof Alan Hutton's amazing stage combat knowledge. Alan, our popular stage combat teacher from summer camp, is a professional fight director, stunt man and pyrotechnician who has worked on plays, films and firework shows throughout Texas. If this workshop inspires you to sign up for Alan's spring stage combat class, the fee for this workshop will be applied toward the class tuition.

Ages:  9 - 14
Dates:  Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008
Time: 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Location:  MST - Chelsea Market
Fee:  $40 ( If this workshop inspires you to sign up for Alan's spring stage combat class, the fee for this workshop will be applied toward the class tuition. )

  Winter Break Camp

For each day of this mini-camp, students will work on short-term projects such as improvisation, storytelling, mask-making, mime and dance routines.  Please note that this year registration is on a daily, not weekly, basis. 

Ages:  6 - 11
Hours:  9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Dates:  Dec. 22, 23, 26, 29, 30; Jan. 2 (Register for one or more dates)
Location:  MST - Chelsea Market
Daily Fee:  $60 (Only $50 if by Oct. 15)

Spring Skills Classes

In the Skills Classes, the students focus on particular aspects of performance and/or production under their teachers' guidance. The students' ideas inspire the final showcase--from selecting material to creating stories, props and costumes.

Core Acting Classes
Like our summer camps, these classes introduce young actors and actresses to the fundamentals of theater: imagination, character development and story, as well as creating basic sets, props and costumes. Using stories from many cultures, they will explore dramatic structure as they create their own piece to perform for family and friends on the last day of class.

  Comedy Improv Showdown

Not just for fans of stand- up comedy or Whose Line Is It Anyway?, this class is an indispensable tool for putting yourself in the mind and body of a chracter and learning to think on your feet. Taught by Caleb George, our Improv teacher from Summer Camp, this class leads up to a hilarious showdown of wit and comedy for family and friends.

Ages:  10-14
Dates:  January 27 - April 7, 2009

  Stage Combat - NEW!!

By popular demand, we are now offering a class dedicated to stage combat 0 the illusion of physical combat used in the theater without causing harm to the performers. Taught by Alan Hutton, our stage combat teacher from Summer Camp, this class will teach students safety procedures and the basics of armed and unarmed stage combat and culminates with a demonstration for family and friends.

Young Han, gatekeeper of the ancient Chinese city of Wu, dreams of being a soldier who can one day protect the city from marauding Wild Horsemen. Han's real adventure begins when a wily trader swindles him out of all of his belongings, including his beloved pet pig Ping. To get Ping back, Han must deal with a bumbling servant from the Mandarin's palace, a Wild Horseman in disguise, the not-so bright Mandarin himself, and a crotchety hermit who is not what she seems.

Spring R&P By Audition
Scapino!

Ottavio loves Giacinta, and Leandro loves Zerbinetta—but their fathers have forbidden them to marry!  Desperate to fool their dads and marry their sweethearts, Ottavio and Leandro turn to their friend Scapino, who weaves a tangled web of lies to swindle the fathers—and their sons.  Scapino, and all those who have trusted him, creates hilarious destruction by digging themselves deeper into trouble with one deceptive scheme after another. This commedia dell'arte reimagining of Moliere features chases, slapstick, mistaken identities, an Italian menu set to opera, and, of course, a happy ending!  Directed by Jonathan Gonzalez.

Registration Policies:
Registrations are accepted by mail and fax only.* See registration form for contact info. Registration will not be accepted without full payment. The KOS office will mail or email your confirmation card when your registration is received. If you do not receive confirmation within 10 business days, please call the KOS office immediately to confirm your place. Registrations submitted at the last minute may not be received in time. Refunds: $50 of class fee is a non-refundable processing fee. No refunds given less than two weeks prior to class start date. No refunds for R&P By Audition classes. Completed release forms must be turned in on or before the first day of class. Please read the Kids On Stage General Information and Policies posted on our website before registering.

*Exception: Registration for R&P By Audition classes will take place on the first day of rehearsal. Please do not send in registration materials for audition-only classes prior to auditioning. There is no fee to audition, but you may need to sign up for a time slot for certain classes.
